Merrill Garbus directed the video for her tUnE-YarDs‘ song “Gangsta”, off w h o k i l l (4AD). The video collects imagery of Garbus goofing for the camera, riding the subway, performing drunken modern dance sequences, and all in a lo-fi, black and white which helps capture the hyped-up, urban anxiety of the song. Really love the final cartoon-like sequence where Garbus keeps falling down, like in some silly silent movie, which shows you can take the girl from the theatre, but you can’t take the theatre from the girl.

Director Tyler T. Williams kills it in his new video for the song “Montana”, off Youth Lagoon‘s new LP, The Year Of Hibernation (Fat Possum)! With a great eye for story and the ability to make the most from a modest budget, this director creates filmic, music videos that pack an emotional punch! Youth Lagoon is twenty-two year old musician Trevor Powers, and if the track and video for “Montana” seem visited by ghosts of the past, Powers explains, “…I just have too many things in my mind that haunt me.”

Many of the past Dum Dum Girls videos used 8 or 16mm film, and featured heavily composited, psychedelic imagery which fit quite well with the bands fuzed-out, 60’s style, garage rock. On their newest Sub Pop release, Only In Dreams, the band cleans up some of that lo-fi noise, and likewise the video for “Bedroom Eyes” is all HD and glamorous. You can do that when you sound great and look great!

In the new Ganglians video for the song “Bradley”, director John Hinckley hits it on the head. Hinckley has re-colored and re-cut clips from Guy Gilles film ‘Au Pan Coupé’ to create a truly striking video that beautifully matches the dream-pop tenor of this outstanding track. You can find “Bradley” on the 2xLP, Still Living, out now on Souterrain Transmissions.

More blithe and androgynous jangle-pop from the Girls! We have the second video from the Girl’s newest LP, Father, Son, Holy Ghost, out now on True Panther Sounds. The video for “Honey Bunny” is directed by Girl’s bassist Chet “JR” White and Ivan Shumaker, and produced by Stu Barnes of the art collective Thugwizardry.

Swahili Blonde play a really infectious and head swirling style of dub that will get you going in all kinds of different directions. Based in LA, Swahili Blonde is fronted by Nicole Turley, and includes a large cast of collaborators, including her husband, ex-Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante. The video for “Purple Ink” is directed by Burke Roberts, and should come with a warning about operating heavy machinery after viewing. You will find the track on their forth coming album Psycho Tropical Ballet Pink, to be released on the label Neurotic Yell.

There’s so much beautifully warped and open space on the Balam Acab track “Now Time”, off the Pennsylvania native’s debut for Tri-Angle Records, Wander / Wonder. Balam Acab is the project of 20 year old Alec Koone, and on his debut he reveals a singular and mysterious music that shimmers with the organic, even while oozing syrupy-slowed vocals and lullaby washes of synth and beats. Another John Hinkley directed video for this track that perfectly captures the wide-eyed abandon of the music.

What kinda mode are you in? Steve Summers is, “In the Mode for Love”. I have a feeling that means lying around the astro van watching vintage porn, but I’m not sure. Steve Summers is actually Jason Letkiewicz, who is the other half of Inner Gaze. This track is part of a 12″ out on the label L.I.E.S., and available thru Boomkat. This video was directed by the Captain of Gunk, Luke Wyatt, and it features an awesomely debauched, noir-esque intro that is worth the price of entry!

Big, beautiful dose of blissed-out electronics on Tom Hall‘s track “4 Seconds of Emotion”, which came out on the cassette Muted Angles this past August on Complicated Dance Steps. Janeva Zentz & Tom Hall direct the video for the track, and they take a simple driving sequence shot from inside a car, and put it through a bunch of mushroom filters, bending and warping reality in ways She didn’t know She could be bent and warped!

It’s interesting that Stan Brakhage intended for most of his eye dazzling films to be played silently, without a musical score, and yet his film techniques have become integral to visual storytelling in music videos. This very cool video from Bryter Layter for their track “First Light” is a perfect example! Bryter Layter is the experimental, electronic duo Mike Pollard and Joe Raglani who also run the labels, Arbor and Pegasus Farm. You will find “First Light” on the bands up-coming LP Two Lenses, to be out on Students of Decay.

Raw Thrills is the side-project of musician Zak Mering, who also plays with the Brooklyn band Greatest Hits. He recorded this track, “Cyborg Wars”, while working on a new Greatest Hits album this summer in Paris. The video features more visuals from Gunk Tv, this time showing off their dystopian, sci-fi visions…
