Seattle’s space rock heavyweights Kinksi have released a new single from their forthcoming album, Cosy Moments. The album is the band’s first since 2007’s Down Below It’s Chaos, and is due out April 2nd on Kill Rock Stars. It seems Kinski’s spent the intervening years doing a bit of sonic self-inquiry, but definitely not of the navel gazing variety! Guitarist and vocalist Chris Martin explains, “We wanted to make something poppier and more direct. That was the kind of music I wanted to hear then and that’s what we tried to do. I was really sick of hearing people step on wah wah pedals and solo over psych rock. There were so many people doing that. Including us. We’ve always had more poppy, song-ish elements but we just took it further this time.” Further, indeed, for a band often known for it’s instrumental post-rock, Cosy Moments finds Martin singing and writing whip-smart lyrics with confidence. For the new album Kinski worked with their long-time recording partner, Seattle’s titan of production, Randall Dunn, and in his hand’s the lightening fast guitar and stellar, rhythmic interplay blister with a vibrant noise. If this is pop-punk, it’s definitely elevated…the kind that would have had Butch Vig creamin’ his pants to get a crack at production! Listen to the single “Conflict Free Diamonds” below:
