Avid fans of modular synths, I Dream of Wires is definitely the documentary for you! Created by the Canadian filmmaker Robert Fantinatto and musician Jason Amm, Wires takes an in-depth look into the history of the synthesizer. Exploring it’s early developments by Moog Music Inc. and Buchla and Associates, it also delves into the recent resurgence of analogue gear while featuring extensive interviews with luminaries like Gary Numan, Carl Craig, Morton Subotnick, Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle), and cEvin Key (Skinny Puppy) as well as leading developers of modular devices like Doepfer, Modcan, Make Noise, Intellijel, Metasonix, and more.

This past August a 4-hour long Hardcore Edition of I Dream of Wires was released on DVD/Blu-Ray as a limited pressing. Intended for “hardcore modular synthesizer and electronic music fanatics,” interest in the film has been so great it has been repressed and is again available from Science With Synthesizers. In addition, a theatrical cut of I Dream of Wires will premiere in the Spring of 2014. The movie will be accompanied by a soundtrack created by Jason Amm who has made music for more than a decade under the name Solvent, for labels like Ghostly International and Morr Music, as well as his own Suction Records.

Taking up the monumental task of creating all the audio using modular gear, Solvent was given access to several large-format synthesizers including a Moog System 15 as well as a more contemporary Eurorack System. The resulting soundtrack, New Ways: Music from the Documentary I Dream Of Wires will be available February 11th on his own Suction Records label. Today we preview the track “King Vincent,” the 9th cut off the soundtrack, and it’s a little like listening to Tangerine Dream upstairs at Eric’s while someone plays Pac Man in the background!
