New Audio: WHITE HILLS RADIO Episode 5 – The Art of the Spoken Word

930

White Hills kicked off 2014 with an excellent podcast, The Art of the Spoken Word, honoring the 40th Anniversary of the Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church in New York City, and today Thrill Jockey passed it on via Soundcloud! Begun in the late sixties by poet and translator Paul Blackburn, The Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church has been ground zero for experimental wordsmiths for over forty years, having featured performances from the likes of Allen Ginsburg, William Burroughs, Ted Berrigan, John Giorno, Anne Waldman, Bernadette Mayer, Patti Smith, Jim Carroll, and countless others from the vanguard of American poetics. For the podcast, White Hills’ singer and guitarist Dave W and bassist/singer Ego Sensation cull together an awesome collection of 14 poets, concentrating in particular on those who straddled the zones between music and the word like Richard Hell, Lydia Lunch, Patti Smith, Exene Cervenka, etc., but there are also readings from progenitors of the avant-literary scene like Burroughs, Brion Gyson, Girono, Waldman and more!
