J.R. Robinson‘s Wrekmeister Harmonies returns with the Then It All Came Down LP, out now on Thrill Jockey. Joined by an all-star cast of characters from the ranks of Chicago’s experimental metal scene, including musicians like Chris Brokaw (Codeine, Come), Sanford Parker (Corrections House, Twilight), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza), and more, Wrekmeister Harmonies is also joined on the record by members of Indian and Leviathan. Across the album length composition, the group melds pastoral ambiance to blackened doom metal as a way of sonically exploring the passage of light into darkness, and all that that metaphorically connotes.
The video for “Then It All Came Down” was directed by Robinson himself, and it uses the music from Parts II and III, a portion in the composition that moves from angelic, choralled vocals into the LP’s first Stygian tones of leaden doom. The video opens with a stained glass inscription that reads “In My Fathers House Are Many Mansions”, before drifting thru a multi-varied dreamlog of visual ephemera that teams with the wilds of nature and the ruins of culture.
Wrekmeister Harmonies performs live this Sunday in Brooklyn at Signal Gallery.
