Watch: Destroyer “Times Square”

495

Destroyer‘s Dan Bejar has always been one to read the writing on the wall, but in “Times Square“, he reveals it wasn’t writing at all, just “forces of nature/in love with the weather station”. Destroyer will release their tenth studio LP, Poison Season, on August 28th via Merge Records, and today we check out the new video for “Times Square”. Directed by Shayne Ehman, and featuring all kinds of claymation and stop motion animation, at first blush these visuals seem a far cry from NYC’s crowded urban center. Filled with strange moss covered forest creatures and psychedelic mycology, Ehman claims that he and Bejar originally intended to shoot the video in the city, but on the night they wandered around New York till 3 am, “the city seemed completely dead”. Trying a different tact, Ehman decided to focus on the track’s lyrics intead. He explains,

“I needed to get outside and shoot in natural light in order to serve as a sort of conduit for those ‘forces of nature in love…’ which seem to rule the song. I let the sun do its thing and let the earth do it’s thing and watched time unfold. I watched the clouds unfold and unpack and packup. I was at their mercy, completely”.
