Listen: John Carpenter “Purgatory (Prurient Remix)”

584

Horror master John Carpenter created the soundtracks for many of his classic films such as Halloween, The Fog, and Assault On Precinct 13. This year the director adds to his oeuvre with the release of his Lost Themes LP via Sacred Bones–a collection of nine new, non-soundtrack compositions.

Created in collaboration with his son Cody, of the prog/fusion band Ludrium, as well as his godson Daniel Davies, who composed the songs for I, Frankenstein, Lost Themes celebrates the glory days of the analogue synthesizer. Digital copies of the album included remixes by artists like Zola Jesus and Dean Hurley, Blanck Mass, Silent Servant, and J.G. Thirlwell.

On October 16th Sacred Bones will release Carpenter’s Lost Themes Remixed, bringing these recasts of the originals to vinyl for the first time. In addition, the record will contain new efforts from Dominick Fernow (Prurient, Vatican Shadow, Hospital Productions) and Ben Greenberg (Uniform). Today we give a listen to Fernow’s remix of “Purgatory,” done under his noisier Prurient guise.

While Carpenter’s “Purgatory” offers the kind of languorous melancholy you might get stuck in for eternity, Prurient filters the original into rusted resonances and head nodding vacancy. Discussing his reworking of the track, Fernow explains:

“John Carpenter is the master of sustained tension with electronic music. The fine line between stasis and energy is almost impossible to define but Carpenter consistently achieves this paradox with Spartan means.”
