Floating Points will release their new EP Kuiper (Luaka Bop/PLUTO) on July 22nd and today we preview the B-side, “For Marmish Part II“. In discussing his track, the UK-based electronic musician Sam Shepherd explains, “
…”For Marmish Part II” is carbon dated by my singing voice. I can’t get that high anymore! It was recorded way before “For Marmish” on the album but the two tracks happened to be written around the same time”.
At the time of the release of the EP’s title track “Kuiper“, the musician explained that his new work was the result of playing with the band he’d assembled to perform tracks from his 2015 studio album, Elaenia.
“Each time we play it, its completely different. We set the scene with electronics, and some drum machines that form the foundation to allow the unfurling of the rest of the track”.
That ensemble feel is very apparent on the 14-minute track, “For Marmish Part II“. Open and airy, the cut follows a jaunty organ line and meandering keys until eventually counter-posing the organ line against itself–as the track’s simmering atmospherics grow. There’s a loose, jazzy feel to the proceedings, and while the cut eventually takes on subtle rhythmic elements, icy key strikes, and Shepard’s ghostly vocals, “For Marmish Part II” floats unhurriedly while eschewing terrestrial confines for these open-air atmospherics.
