Listen to Xiu Xiu’s Track “Wondering”:

New music from Xiu Xiu is always welcome news around here! Luckily, Jamie Stewart‘s trio knows how to keep themselves busy so we rarely want for long. For instance, this year the group released their Plays the Music of Twin Peaks LP, collaborated with Mitski on a song for an upcoming John Cameron Mitchell film, composed music for Danh Vo‘s art installations, recorded an album with Merzbow, as well as scoring an experimental reworking of Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute. And, as if that wasn’t enough, Xiu Xiu announced this week a new LP release called FORGET due out February 24th via Polyvinyl.

On the album producer John Congleton (Blondie, Sigur Ros) will return to the fold and he will be joined by Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier, as well as the band’s Angela Seo. FORGET will also feature performances from Xiu Xiu’s personal hero, the drag artist Vaginal Davis, as well as Swan’s guitarist Kristof Hahn, and the minimalist composer Charlemagne Palestine, to name a few. “Wondering” is the upcoming album’s first single and it wraps noisy synth-pop around a gnawing core of cavernous tension–the perfect atmosphere for Jamie Stewart’s inimitable vocal style. The band reports that the calligraphy on the cover reads, “to forget”, and Stewart explains the significance of the album’s cover and title this way:

“To forget uncontrollably embraces the duality of human frailty. It is a rebirth in blanked out renewal but it also drowns and mutilates our attempt to hold on to what is dear. FORGET is both the palliative fade out of a traumatic past but also the trampling pain of a beautiful one’s decay.”
