Street Eaters new track “Means” is off their upcoming LP The Envoy due out May 12th via the duo’s label Nervous Intent Records. The album was inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin‘s Hainish Cycle novels, The Dispossessed and Left Hand of Darkness. In an extensive conversation over at Spark Mag with Victoria Ruiz (Downtown Boys), the band’s vocalist/drummer Megan March explains that the record’s 13-track song cycle explores themes related to the individual’s struggles against “forces of oppression like capitalism, patriarchy, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, white supremacy…”

March’s drumming on “Means” is urgent and ominous, and her bandmate John No adds blunt and angular basslines fed thru a guitar amp. The vocals that begin the track are taken from The Dispossessed, and March explained to Ruiz that they talk about the ways in which people let their possessions own them, adding: “I took that idea in a parallel direction to think about the mental states that society puts us into, questioning if these sicknesses are self-contained, mental illnesses, or if the real sickness is being imposed on us.”

Street Eaters are currently on a tour of the US this month before heading off to Europe and the UK for an extensive tour schedule. You can find the full list of dates after the Soundcloud embed…
