Golden Retriever‘s Rotations LP just came out on Thrill Jockey so let’s checkout the duo’s new video for “Pelagic Tremor.” Work on the record started when Matt Carlson and Jonathan Sielaff received a grant from Portland’s Regional Arts & Culture Council to organize a performance of new material at Portland?s The Old Church back in 2015.

Seeking a new work set-up, Carlson and Sielaff added piano, strings, wind instruments, percussion, synthesizer, and pipe organ to their usual duo of effected bass clarinet and modular synthesizer. In addition, instead of building their tracks from studio improvisations that had coalesced into structure, this time the pair came with rudimentary acoustic compositions worked out on bass clarinet and piano, using them to develop the themes and motifs that would become Rotations.

Pelagic Tremor” follows the ensemble’s oceanic swells into luminous fields of ambiance so it’s no wonder that the video for the track features plenty of striking water footage. Directed by Jeff Guay, the visuals open with the blue tumble of underwater footage before placing the viewer on a sandy shore with long waves rolling in. Later a protagonist appears, but only from the back, and we watch tree-lined roads recede or the shore from out on the open water from over her bare shoulder. If you live in the Northwest, you can catch Golden Retriever live in Portland and Seattle. Don’t miss the tour dates after the YouTube embed below…
