Watch: John Maus “The Combine”

John Maus returns with his new album Screen Memories due out October 27th via Ribbon Music. This will be his fourth LP since 2006, and his first since releasing his groundbreaking effort, 2011’s We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves. In the six year interim, Maus has been busy writing and recording at his remote residence in Minnesota, and “The Combine” is our first listen in on the upcoming record.

Featuring the kind of unassuming but catchy synth pop that made his last LP such a revelation, on “The Combine” Maus weaves glowing synth lines and crisp drum patterns into a soaring and warm arrangement. Complete with his deep but monotone vocal delivery, and the repeated assertion that he sees the combine coming, he raises this image to cosmic significance when he concludes, “It’s going to dust us all to nothing.” The video for the track was directed by Tina Rivera, and it presents imagery of wheat being threshed, but like in “Believer” heavily effected visuals make for a colorful and kaleidoscopic visual experience.
