Always like to hear what Jlin‘s been up to and if that means I get to listen to Ben Frost too, all the better. Frost’s The Centre Cannot Hold is due out September 29th via Mute. Recorded over a ten day period by Steve Albini in Chicago, the record finds Frost in the primary role of musician, with his interest in sound design turned over to the famed engineer/producer.

Here, Jlin reworks the album track “Ionia.” Possibly drawn to the cut’s snake-like percussive elements, often a component of her own rhythms, this take on things reframes the essentials of “Ionia,” presenting them in the kind of kinetic conversation that animates Footwork’s famed dance battles. While Jlin has moved on from her origins in the genre, she’ll probably never lose her unique take on those rhythms because movement and dance are still the beating heart of her work.
