The Toronto-based post-punk outfit Beliefs will release their upcoming LP Habitat on September 22nd via Outside Music/Hand Drawn Dracula. The new record was written by core members Jesse Crowe and Josh Korody (Nailbiter, WISH), and Crowe reports, “We wrote 80% of it in a room in four days with no previous material.” They would go onto record Habitat in sixteen days with Korody acting as producer/engineer, Leon Taheny (Austra, Death From Above 1979) sitting in on drums, and Holy Fuck’s Graham Walsh giving the album its’ final mixdown.

On “Comb” we can hear Beliefs evolving from their shoegaze beginnings into something a bit wider open. The track really demonstrates Korody’s increasing interest in modular synths, as well as electronic music in general. Kick drum and glitched bass drone provide a pounding pulse here before marshaled snare rolls add to this track’s industrial atmosphere. Eventually, Crowe and Korody join vocal forces using measured rage to turn the lines, “Manipulate/Can’t translate/Voices raised/Can’t escape,” into a harrowing refrain. The performance-driven video for “Comb” was directed by Andrew Matthews and Ivy Lovell, and it was shot at the Toronto venue Baby G.

Look for Beliefs play shows in Canada and Europe with Metz, Algiers, and Odonis Odonis this coming October and November. You can find the band’s upcoming live dates after the YouTube embed below…
