Jonathan Gillie is an amazing visual artist who has also been working in sound composition since the mid-90’s. This past October, the experimental French label Tsuku Boshi released Gillie’s Describing A Space LP. The artist’s drifting compositions collage together field recordings, as well as his experiments with acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Often composed to accompany his visual animations, Gillie builds tracks in conversation with his video work, and while the two are stunning in tandem, Describing A Space more than stands on it’s own as an intriguing audio document of psychedelic ambiance.

With “Divisions,” we get to witness the artist’s skill with both sound and image, and it’s an experience you won’t soon forget. Harmonized tones seem to pass in close proximity like shifting panels of sound, in the process generating an eerie but meditative hum that goes right to work opening the higher chakras. Ultimately calming, this metallic stream of resonance also sounds deeply cosmic–and beyond Human. Gillie couples the soundtrack with strobing geometric images to echo his harmonic interplay of sounds. Tattva-like shapes flicker in neon creating visual overload as the mind relaxes its’ grasp and surrenders to the barrage of color and form. Need to defrag your neurons? Jonathan Gillie’s “Divisions” will do just that!
