Luis Vasquez continues his downward spiral as The Soft Moon. On February 2nd, the artist will release his fourth studio album Criminal via Sacred Bones. From our first listen in on the LP with the track “Burn” this past October, we knew the record would be one of our favorite albums of 2018. “Choke” continues the darkly themed and personal explorations of Criminal, with Vasquez explaining:
“I created “Choke” as a theme song to my recurring corruptive behavior. It’s emblematic of my sleepless nights, wandering the streets of Berlin like some paranoid animal, while capturing the unbearable sound of my pulsating heart deep inside my chest. Full of ego and full of fear at the same time.”
Accosting blasts of smoldering bass animate this track, while the noxious fog of a petroleum fire rises into the darkening skies. Hemmed in by a narrow 4/4 and looped redundancy, this cut feels like a repetitive drug ritual with Vasquez returning to the lines: “Take your time/Crush me right/Take your time/Crush me fine,” with mantric insistency.
