Listen: Verst “Haleakala”

Winter got you in a deep freeze? The San Fransisco-based trio Verst has just the answer with their volcanic cut, “Haleakala,” off the band’s latest LP David Slain (Cream Cloud Records). The trio is helmed by guitarist/vocalist John Dickey, formerly of the 90’s era Boston-based band Pie, as well as a number of more recent West Coast projects including Psionic Mantis and Richard Bitch. He is joined in the group by bassist/vocalist John Parsons and drummer/vocalist Brandon Hemley, both of the now-defunct Bay Area quartet Rule of Thumb.

As Verst, the musicians throw a number of influences into the blender to whip up a strong cocktail that is nearly equal parts Psych, Prog and Indie rock. David Slain tends to be slightly heavier in places than their 2016 effort, Starship Crash, but throughout the band’s melodic guitar playing and interwoven vocals shine their warm light. Gorgeous as a sunrise bike ride up to Maui’s preeminent crater, “Haleakala” is just the kind of sonic gem you want echoing through your head on a cold January day. The track actually features John Parsons on lead vocals, as well as acoustic guitar from sometimes Verst member Mike Margulies. Filled with soaring guitar work and buoyant vocals, this is one of David Slain‘s most intoxicating numbers!
