Watch: Screature “Waiting for a Light”

The Sacramento-based post-punk band Screature sure taps into a dark vein of death rock on their new LP Old Hand New Wave, out now on the group’s Ethel Scull Records label. Recorded and mixed by Chris Woodhouse (Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Wand) at Dock Studio in March of 2017, the band’s latest effort has a way of sounding like all hell is breaking loose. Leading up to the release, Screature delivered videos for the track’s “Hit the Void” and “North of Order,” and they revealed a controlled chaos and colossal sound.

This week we check out the band’s new video for “Waiting for a Light.” Led by vocalist Liz Mahoney, whose husky growl can stop you dead in your tracks, this cut reels and rocks around the noisy exchange between organist Sarah Scherer and guitarist Chris Orr, while drummer Miranda Vera drives the charge with a pounding gallop. The visuals capture the action with footage of the band playing in what looks like it could be their tightly packed practice space. The black and white images have a hectically paced stop-motion feel to them, and they provide a glimpse into Screature’s tightly wound energy. Speaking of which, you can catch the group live on February 3rd in Sacramento at the Holy Diver.
