Last month we learned the doctor’s back and he’s ready to operate…Dr. Octagon returns on April 6th with the first record in 22 years, Moosebumps: an exploration into modern day horripilation (Bulk Recordings/Caroline). Featuring the groups original line-up of Dan The Automator, Kool Keith, and DJ QBert, the upcoming record promises to be the proper follow-up to their legendary 1996 release, Dr. Octagonecologyst. Largely recorded in 24-hour sessions, Moosebumps finds the formidable veterans in fighting form.
“Area 54” is our next listen in on what the guys got cooking. Automator reports that “Area 54 is the greatest disco in the galaxy,” before coyly offering, “The things we ‘haven’t’ seen there.” The producer layers porn clip dialogue and disorienting synth drift over QBert’s scratch work before a gnarly rhythm line drops with what sounds like a baritone sax sample that gets things really cooking here. Reprising his role as Dr. Octagon, Kool Keith is that “astronaut in the zone,” and on “Area 54” his spacecraft’s up so high, he can see the devil grin.
