SEPTEMBER 8, 2008
TV PARTY: RA RA RIOT, FRIENDLY FIRES, STEREOLAB
bb
This week from Barsuk Records, Ra Ra Riot‘s video for the song “Ghost Under the Rocks” off their debut album The Rhumb Line. Brian Savelson directed the video and Mr. Savelson’s recent video for Band of Horses won two MVPA awards, so check out what he does with Ra Ra Riots infectious melding of new wave orchestral pop! Also up this month, a new album and video from Stereolab. Now, that’s reason to celebrate! Stereolab’s eleventh album and debut on the label 4AD is called Chemical Chords and we have the video for the song “Neon Beanbag”. The video visually harkens back to the early days of music videos through director Julian House’s use of 80’s style visual effects, which he colors with surrealistic twists!. And, finally, dont forget to check out Friendly Fires “Jump In The Pool”, for some cool reprieve from the summers heat. Their new self titled album on XL Recordings is a trippy blast of shoe gaze pop!

TV PARTY: DEVENDRA BARNHART, VAMPIRE WEEKEND, JAGUAR LOVE
bb
Check out sweethearts Devendra Barnhart and Natalie Portman in the video for the song “Carmensita”, off his 2007 album Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon…just getting around to his first video from last year’s album, smokey indeede! Worth the wait, though, featuring Natalie P., Bollywood motifs, and Spanish lyrics! On entirely a different front, Vampire Weekend bring the balmy breeze of a Cape Cod summer with two more video offerings from this years well received,
self-titled album on XL Recordings. Serious preppy East coast vibe here on videos for the songs, “Oxford Comma” and “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa”. And finally, from the demise of Seattle’s, The Blood Brothers, comes Johnny Whitney and Cody Votolotto’s new effort Jaguar Love. They have a new album out on Matador called Take me To the Sea and we have the video for the song “Highways Of Gold”!

Garage Rocks Podcast:
bb

It might seem like the Northwest had some sort of premium on the golden days of garage rock, boasting such classic heavyweights as The Kingsmen, Paul Revere and the Raiders, as well as The Sonics; while in reality we were just one of many active music scenes venerating all that was loud and raw in rock, and like other regions, it was the our relative isolation from the mainstream media markets that produced our unique take on blues-based music.
This month on Live Eye Tv we celebrate the raucous, do it yourself spirit of garage rock with some of our favorite noise-makers! The Pharmacy hail from Seattle and play the most infectious pure drunk fun we’ve seen in awhile, and like their current tour mates and long time kings of clown, Japanther, they also amaze with songs of perfect pop punk genius.
Also up this month, The Old Haunts from Olympia, WA, mix up a swampy brew of garage punk narrating dark tales of the broken and bleeding hearted that would even make a band like X proud! Blood on the Wall follow up their killer 2005 album Awesomer with this years Liferz on the Social Registry label, and it is another strong dose of 90’s nostalgia in all the best ways. Watch them tear through a set at The Chop Suey in Seattle, or check out one of our favorite garage heros John Dwyer’s newest band, Thee Oh Sees. In his newest incarnation Mr. Dwyer adds a British Invasion feel to his already stellar garage punk resume.
And to round up this month, Brooklyn’s electro-gypsies Aa blow up the dance party with their spastic drum circle gymnastics. That’s right, I said drum circle you haters! Bask in the bohemian glow, yo…

The band follows up last years’ spectacular documentary, Heima, with another visual treat. “Gobbledigook” is directed by Stefan Arnie and Siggi Kinski, shot by the fantastic cinematographer Christopher Doyle, and it features Ryan Mcginley‘s love of naked forest revelers! Yummy…if you’re of age and all!! Also, up this week electro, wizardly duo of Matmos, with a visual offering for the song “Exciter Lamp and the Variable Band”, as well as Mates of State, those Barsuk Record dandies, with a video for the song “My Only Offer”, directed by The Beta Movement!! “A Soft Kill is a record fans of old Of Montreal, Elf Power, New Pornographers, Olivia Tremor Control, and anything from the Elephant 6 Collective, do not want to miss. This release finds From Bubblegum To Sky’s Mario Hernandez as a fully matured pop songwriter with incessantly catchy yet unpredictable melodies and pop hooks perfectly accentuated by the fuzzy lo-fi textures crafted at CBS Studios in Oakland, CA on a Tascam one-inch reel-to-reel…A Soft Kill is an album that is at once accessible, realistically morose, and expertly played.” (Fanatic Promtions)

bbTilly and the Wall O “Cacophony” Team Love
The new Tilly and the Wall album has been two years in the waiting and it doesn’t disappoint with its deft meshing of joyous sing along boy-girl lyrics, toe tapping percussions, and piano or horn driven melodies. A serious good time…even for a jaded hipster. C’mon, try it. You know you wanna…

Health//Disco is a remix of the the bands first album by artists like Acid Girls, CFCF, Curses!, Pink Skulls, Crystal Castles, etc. and yet it manages to re-spin the songs into a cohesive and tight cycle…I think they used to call them albums…A sort of dance floor drama for your ears.

bbThe Terrordactyls The Mike Bowers EP “Overcast Summer”
The Terrordactyls create beautifully crafted pop songs that sound completely uncrafted, as though you are hearing them stumble upon magic for the first time. Really hard to do!! Anways, The Mike Bowers EP covers songs from their friends, and one time band mates, The Pharmacy. And, yep, that’s Brendhan Bower’s, The Pharmacy drummers’ pops, there on the cover.
