Music News: Rose Windows Sign To Sub Pop, Release Track “Native Dreams”

Seattle psych/folk collective Rose Windows announced today that they have signed to Sub Pop, and will release their debut LP The Sun Dogs on June 25th. The project started with Seattle musician Chris Cheveyo looking for additional ways to expand his sonic pallette. Rather than turning to new technologies in an effort to move forward, Cheveyo sought to do so by uncovering the past while also exploring non-Western forms of music.

Rose Windows began with a few home recorded demos, but soon Cheveyo added friend and musician Rabia Shaheen Qazi on vocals, roommate David Davila on organ and piano, former bandmates Nils Petersen and Pat Schowe on guitar and drums, as well as frequent houseguests Richie Rekow and Veronica Dye on bass and flute. Today the track “Native Dreams” was made available for download, and as it demonstrates, the band’s expanded sonic palette is built for long journeys with world-trippin’ time travel, no problem.

The song’s opening flute melody blows thru smokey, night air while bass and drums portend an encroaching menace finally unleashed in the form of a heavy, black metal assault, Middle Eastern melodies, and Qazi’s laced arrow of a voice! The Sun Dogs was recorded by Seattle’s stellar producer and engineer Randall Dunn at Avast!, and his ability to handle the devastatingly heavy and the sonically nuanced is the perfect match for Rose Windows’ accomplished sound. The band hits the road this March for some dates across the West and Southwest, so don’t miss ’em if they’re heading your way!
