Ghost’s Masaki Batoh will tour the US later this April in support of his outstanding Drag City LP, Brain Pulse Music, a requiem for Japan in the aftermath of their 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Batoh will be bringing along his Brain Pulse Music Machine, an extraordinary device that converts the brain’s alpha, theta and delta waves into sheets of throbbing, pulsing sound. In addition to his lengthy career as an experimental musician, Batoh runs a thriving acupuncture clinic in Japan, and he conceived of the Brain Pulse Music Machine not only as a creative and meditative device, but also as an instrument for treating abnormalities of the central nervous system including ADD, ADHD, epilepsy, as well as autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. The device transmits brainwaves via a headset to a motherboard containing a generator. Using various knobs such as frequency, sensitivity, threshold and volume one can transform their thoughts into wild permutations of tone and music. Batoh informs us though, that to use the machine well requires the ability to go internal, or to begin the practice of meditation, explaining, “…if you loose your satori, if you are out of meditative mode, if you went back to the materialistic world, in an instant your contact trip might terminate.” What follows are two videos, one a demonstrational video by Batoh for the BPM, the other a promotional video for the Brain Pulse Music LP.
