wosevents_web.jpgBurial / S/T [Hyperdub]
On this self-titled CD debut, Burial carves out a sound which sends the dormant slinky syncopations of UK garage, via radio interference, into a padded cell of cushioned, muffled bass, passing through the best of Pole’s crackle dub. In its loud quietness, Burial takes his kitchen crackle aesthetic neither from the digital glitch nor merely a nostalgia for vinyl’s materiality. Burial’s mix is haunted. Echoed voices breeze in and out, on road to another time. Pirate signals from other frequencies steams in. A tidal wave of noise submerging all but the crispest syncopations. The noise is not violent, but caressing, seducing you in. Its really pretty.

Parenthetical Girls / Safe As Houses [Slender Means Society]
Portland’s Zac Pennington is at it again. Heartfelt epic beauty.. with glockenspiels!! Sad, sweet, and joyful. Like a more relaxed Arcade Fire. Also featuring Jherek Bischoff and Sam Mickens of Dead Science.

ESG / Keep On Moving [Soul Jazz]
The legendary ESG return with their first new album in nearly five years on Soul Jazz Records. The new album features their trademark stripped down punk/funk style that has spawned a whole generation of fans and bands thirty years on from their first release. First produced by Martin Hannett, ESG were instantly accepted into the worlds of punk/new wave, hip-hop and dance music, a unique position that still holds true today. Their track ‘UFO’ is one of the most sampled tracks in the history of hip-hop. So wave your hands in the air, you know this is the bomb!

Edip Akbayram / S/T [Shadoks Music]
Hooray for reissues!!! Middle-Eastern psych fans listen up… this two-disc album is a necessity. Among the big three Turkish delights (Erkin Koray, Baris Mancho, and Edip), Edip Akbayram’s sound is full of fuzz guitar, electric sax, and great percussions. This release includes the best psych tracks from his first two albums and many singles–22 tracks, 90 minutes of music. Deeply spiritual.

Alva Noto / For [Line]
“This Alva Noto CD brings together disparate recordings created throughout the last four years, unified under a theme of dedication. All nine studies share the history of being made specifically for someone or for a project that for one reason or another remained open ended. ‘Wall Anfang’ for example, opens with the voice sample ‘there must be a reason why it is so clear in my mind.’ When we realize the person speaking is pioneering contemporary Canadian photographer Jeff Wall, we may understand the rising high tone that introduces the track as the imitation of a photo-flash warming up to be triggered. The track was originally prepared for a documentary about Wall, who became famous for his large scale light boxes that cast white light evenly through his photographs. Like this balanced light, the track presents a purity of thought that spirals inside and out… — Andrew Cannon excerpted. Japanese printmaker Katsushika Hokusai, and Coils Jhonn Balance are among the other artists recognized. A divinely elegant and delicate release.
