Lower‘s outstanding debut LP Seek Warmer Climes will surely be on our list of favorite records for 2014. Today, the Danish post-punk quartet released a new band-directed video for the album’s second track “Daft Persuasion“. Singer Adrian Toubro narrates his icy mellow drama with the kind of griping vocal delivery that keeps you on the edge of your seat with each turn of phrase, while the band sculpts a tightly wound whirl wind of violence that simmers and broods, before lashing out in stabs of angular guitar and rapid drum fire.
The video for “Daft Persuasion” finds Turbo seated comfortably on a black leather couch in front of a blank white wall, with his mate, hooded and draped over his shoulder, tight-lipped and wearing mirrored sunglasses as he stares blankly back at the camera, while Turbo recites the lyrics with wary non-chalance. The effect is surprisingly subversive in it’s simplicity, with this plain but intimate gesture of male camaraderie able to suggest so much about the layered complexity of human relationships! The video goes on to intersperse this scene with a dream-like collection of moments between friends, lovers, and bandmates, and it demonstrates Lower’s deep concern with the personal “ethics” of those relationships, and the responsibility we bear in our interactions with our fellows.
