Listen: Belong “Red Velvet Or Nothing”

Belong, the New Orleans-based duo of Turk Dietrich (Second Woman) and Mike Jones, will issue a definitive vinyl repressing of their out-of-print, post-rock classic October Language on April 20th via Spectrum Spools. Originally recorded in Dietrich’s bedroom in 2004, and released in 2006 via Carpark Records, the album would go on to see a limited edition vinyl pressing by Geographic North in 2009. Composed using a mix of processed guitar and synthesizer, the duo’s ambiant-leaning work has drawn comparisons to electronic artists like Tim Hecker and Fennesz, as well as the soaring sonic overload of My Bloody Valentine.

Red Velvet Or Nothing” has a slow-motion Shoegaze vibe that finds the players exchanging tones in an aquatic ebb and flow. Warm but raspy sounds on the edge of splintering apart meet a celestial and expansive float as these seemingly disparate sonic textures intermingle in a watery back and forth. Like a salubrious soak in a salty sea, “Red Velvet Or Nothing” combines its’ gritty textures and open-air panoramas into a restorative respite good for ears and soul.

Look for this vinyl pressing of October Language to come with reimagined artwork, and it will include a download card with 3 extra tracks from Belong’s Tour EP–recorded in 2005 and sold as a CD-R at live shows while in support of Ariel Pink in 2006. Spectrum Spools reports these tracks are exclusive to the vinyl purchase, and won’t be sold digitally.
