New Video: Life Coach “Ohm”

Outer space is definitely the place, and Phil Manley has been well acquainted with it’s environs since his futureworld days with Trans Am. The esteemed producer (Wooden Shjips, Date Palms, Barn Owl, etc.) and musician (The Fucking Champs, Oneida, etc.) has reunited with friend, and former Golden bandmate, Jon Theodore (Mars Volta), as well as Isaiah Mitchell (Earthless, Golden Void), to round out what started as a solo project for Manley. Life Coach finds Theodore on drums, Mitchell on guitar, and multi-instramentalist Manley handling a variety of duties, including vocals and keyboard. The trio’s newest record Alphawaves, out now on Thrill Jockey, was conceived as a singular piece, with each of the eight tracks unfolding kriya-like for a primal, sonic narrative. Today we have a video for the record’s closer, the majestic drone cut, and cleverly punned track “Ohm“. Directed by Zander Mackie and Miles Votek, the video makes awesome use of old, VCR home-footage that seems to feature a boy’s journey to Cape Canaveral for a space shuttle launch, composited and collaged with all kinds of creepy and alien imagery-including medical footage, unidentified flying and frying objects, as well as miniature alien environments.
