Listen: Gordan “Down in the Meadow”

439

Gordan is a Serbian folk/noise trio helmed by the master vocalist Svetlana Spajić, an artist possessing a voice of unbelievable power. She has spent the last twenty-five years studying with older generations of traditional Serbian vocalists to keep this musical culture alive. As Gordan, she is joined by drummer, percussionist, composer Andi Stecher, and Guido Möbius, who provides bass and electronics.

The trio is currently readying their LP entitled Down in the Meadow, due out September 20th via Rabih Beaini‘s experimental label Morphine Records. The title track, like all of the songs on the forthcoming album, employs traditional Serbian lyrics. Here Spajić performs an ancient love song from Kosovo with earth moving passion while her voice’s piercing quality seems to channel the spirit of ancestors past. Meanwhile, a drifting soundscape like a dark meadow under full moon simmers resonant tones of mantric drone and ritualized percussion.
