Jacob Sigman ‘Virginia’ EP (Nah Collective)

Jacob Sigman is a young, immensely talented songwriter and musician from Ann Arbor, Michigan, and his recently released EP Virginia, out now via the Nah Collective, is a beautiful five-song assortment of chamber-pop based on the artist’s travels to Spain. Fans of bands like Seattle’s Hey Marseilles and The Head and the Heart, or local label Barsuk’s Ra Ra Riot, will find much to love in Jacob’s lushly crafted and wide-hearted style! The EP’s standout single “Silas” is a great place to begin, and it’s use of ambient, open air sounds to start the track, before the exuberant rush of orchestration, heavy, timpani-like drums, and Sigman’s fresh air vocal delivery even begins, means that this track’s slow building grandeur is wrapped in just the right amount dusty road grit! While only nineteen years of age, Sigman already displays a compositional sense beyond his years, fleshing out his ecstatic poetry with strings and horns, and well-placed found sounds, making for a music that feels passionately lived. Each song here is strong, with something to reveal, and other standouts include the thrillingly delivered love song “Your Father“, with it’s Spanish flavored tangle of acoustic guitar, as well as the gorgeous closer “Amor Eterno“, where Sigman’s soaring Spanish vocals are delivered amongst a bed of accompanying and interweaving backing vocals, provided by his talented band. Jacob Sigman will play an up-coming live date on February 7th in Toledo, OH at the Ottawa Bar with fellow label mates Silent Lions, and word is Sigman plans to hit the road this summer for some more US dates. We will keep you posted!
