Shabazz PalacesLese Majesty is out now on Sub Pop, and today we take a look at their new video for the track “#Cake“. Directed by the accomplished video artist Hiro Murai, whose trademark use of human figures and objects that are out of scale with their environment, such as the giant woman on museum display in his video for St. Vincent‘s “Cheerleader”, also uses the technique to create striking results here. Gritty, nocturnal footage of a man running down a deserted city street is coupled with shots from an abandoned factory and church, creating a haunting, paranoid vibe; however, about the time THEESatisfaction’s Catherine Harris-White begins her rap, this rather standard music video fare become dislocated by the image of a giant, naked female form, perfectly posed and reclining in the street so as to not reveal a thing, but dwarfing buildings and street lamps alike! The effect is startling, and the perfect accompaniment for a track that keeps you spellbound, and on the edge of your seat throughout.
