Watch: FKA twigs “Pendulum”

1959

FKA twigs directs her own video for “Pendulum“, off the musician’s critically acclaimed debut album LP1, out now on Young Turks. Teaming up with the production company Academy Plus, “Pendulum” continues to reveal twigs as an artist capable of creating an idiosyncratic and cutting edge self-image, with each addition to her visual oeuvre only increasing her iconic stature. Here, she partners with Dave Rickman (aka WykD Dave), an expert practitioner of the Japanese style of rope bondage known as kinbaku/shibari. Striking images abound, seeming to make explicit the song’s title, as FKA twigs hangs by a complex web of black rope that seems to mirror her long braided hair. Rotating camera angles add to the surreal effect, as the artist is seen suspended above a liquid pool of mutating silver. FKA twigs has long surpassed her role as just a back-up dancer in some other pop stars video, as she is now the creator of the music and image herself; and while it’s still early in her career, she continues to show the sky is not the limit for her unique, multi-talented skill set.
