Sam Prekop‘s LP The Republic is out now on Thrill Jockey. On it, The Sea and Cake guitarist/vocalist returns to explore his modular synth side. Originally conceived to accompany David Hartt‘s work of the same name, and for which Prekop composed these tracks, the album collects together the more experimental and ambient tracks from the video installation, as well as more song oriented cuts like “Weather Vane“.
The video for the track is composed of various segments from Hartt’s film, a visual study conceived around the failed attempts of Greek urban planner Constantinos Doxiadis, who received commissions from both Athens and Detroit to revitalize their crumbling city centers. While the stellar film work stitches together these cities into a worldly megalopolis, the images that leave the biggest impression show a group of men, Sisyphus-like, rolling over an old car in a frozen junk yard.
Sam Prekop will tour the US this coming spring and summer, a difficult feat and rare opportunity considering the delicate complexity of a modular synth set-up. Don’t miss him…
