Shigeto “Pulse”

Shigeto has a new track entitled “Pulse” off his upcoming 6-song EP Intermission due out on Ghostly International. Since putting out his 2013 LP No Better Time Than Now, Detroit producer Zach Saginaw has been busy building a new studio, playing electronics in a jazz quartet, recording with local rappers, and, as always, extensive touring. As the interim has found him exploring various new paths, we haven’t heard much from the musician. Saginaw explains:

“I haven’t found the next step for me yet. I’ve been making loads of music as always, but I’m still looking for that concrete new path.”

While LP’s like No Better Time Than Now and Lineage were conceptually focused affairs, this upcoming EP finds the artist between styles and approach. But that’s not a bad thing at all, and an EP is the perfect format for those creatively in-between times. Saginaw explains that these tracks “point to the past, present, and future”, and they seem to find him stretching his legs while integrating lessons learned from previous work.

Like much of the producer’s music, “Pulse” has a stylish and expressive groove, and he crafts a worldly sonic palette; but rather uncharacteristically, he includes a clipped vocal sample into the mix. The result is like hanging on the edge of sleep in a hypnagogic audio experience. Dreamy indeed!
