Listen to Blank Square’s Track “Charmer”:

Blank Square‘s track “Charmer” is off the SF-based band’s upcoming LP Animal 1, due out February 24th via Castle Face Records. The quartet has been compared to early SST Records’ bands like The Flesh Eaters, and post-punks like The Fall, but the band’s inclusion of saxophone in their line-up means they also draw comparisons to James Chance and the Contortions. While many of the track’s on Animal 1 bristle with a taut, angular energy, “Charmer” begins with a looser vibe buoyed by the sax’s warm, reedy sound. However, this initial tact only serves to throw the listener off the scent of glue these cats have been huffing. At about a minute in, “Charmer” launches its’ energy in a forward heave and it’s a roiling, headlong tumble from there. By the time vocals enter, the track bristles with anxiety as one singer’s eerie musings are punctuated by the other’s violent exclamation, “Ghost”. You can check out the album art for Animal 1 below, as well as the record’s full track list.
