(Clan Of) Xymox is readying a remastered 2xLP vinyl release of their 1989 classic Twist Of Shadows via Pylon Records. The 2xCD version came out this week on November 7th while the album’s limited edition vinyl (500 translucent red and 500 black) is due out on November 9th. Twist Of Shadows was the third studio album from the Dutch darkwave band, and it was originally released on the PolyGram subsidiary Wing. Featuring the band’s founding, life-long member Ronny Moorings on vocals, guitar, and keyboards, he was also joined by Anka Wolbert on vocals, keyboards, and bass, as well as Pieter Nooten on keyboards. In addition, Twist Of Shadows was produced by Peter Walsh (Heaven 17, Peter Gabriel, Scott Walker, Gene Loves Jezebel) and the tracks “Tonight” and “Clementina” featured strings from the Arditti Quartet–with arrangements from longtime David Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti.
Capturing Billboard’s “Hot Shot Debut” honor, the album also featured the US charting singles “Obsession,” “Blind Hearts,” and “Imagination.” Below, you can listen to a club mix of “Obsession” which reached No. 16 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in March of 1989. Featuring propulsive rhythms, the moody ambiance of padded synths, and Moorings’ goth-tinged vocals, the cut proves the timeless appeal of Xymox while cementing their legendary place in the world of synth-pop.
