Beechwood sure sound broken and low down on their cut “I Know It’s Not Right” out now via Alive Naturalsound Records. The NYC glam/psych trio explains that the track was recorded during the sessions for 2017’s Songs from the Land of Nod (Burger Records). Singer-songwriter-guitarist Gordon Lawrence goes on to note:

“I was in bad shape when I wrote and recorded this song. I was physically and mentally broken and didn’t see a way out at the time, but I still believed that things would get better, even at my worst. I just didn’t know what that would look like or when it would be. It’s hard for me to listen to this song because I don’t like to think of that time, but at least I was self-aware enough to come out and say “I know it’s not right.” I’ve never tried to justify what I was doing, but I knew it was wrong. I just didn’t know how to get help until about two years later. Recordings capture a moment in time, and as dark as things may have been, I’m still happy that I was able to capture how I felt, just in case I ever forget.”

Suffused in an after-hours vibe and sounding something like Elliot Smith and Spiritualized jamming at the Pearly Gates, “I Know It’s Not Right” has the intimate feel of a late-night recording session. Slightly off-kilter and shuffling along in an inebriated glow, this cut’s strange guitar tunings set the stage for Lawrence’s midnight confessions. Serenaded by this chorus of crying kittens and laughing goblins, the singer opens a fresh vein to explain, “There’s only one thing that makes it alright/And it’s not right.” That’s what they call being at the end of your rope, but luckily, as Lawrence explains, he found enough slack to come back.
