Uay ‘La Selva’ (Halfshell Records)

Welcome to the jungle. Not the mean streets of West Hollywood, the real jungle, man! With the Guadalajara-based psych duo Uay as your guide, La Selva (Halfshell Records) promises to be quite the toad-licking trip. Helmed by bassist/vocalist Rodrigo Torres and guitarist/vocalist Francisco Lopez, the group also features a rotating cast of drummers, percussionists, and other musical guests. The pair are also founding members of the Mexicadelia Festival, which has helped showcase the Mexican psych scene while creating bridges with like-minded folks in the States through a touring festival.

On “Para Salr de la Selva” a narcotic guitar-line unlocks the doors of perception with face-melting abandon while humid sounding bass provides throbbing counter-point. As cloud bursts of percussion cascade through the mix, a chthonic groove of polyrhythms braids into a double-helix of dynamic energy. With mantra-like vocals to provide further focus to the proceedings, Uay bring the heavens down to earth for a terrestrial jam with cosmic dimensions. Welcome to the jungle friend, now here’s the way out…

Uay’s La Selva is out now digitally on Halfshell Records, and is also available as a very limited edition cassette from the label. Grab one while they last.
