Listen: Ross From Friends “Love Divide”

Ross From Friends is readying his Tread LP for release on October 22nd via Brainfeeder. The UK-based producer, real name Clary Weatherall, first dropped news of the album with the single/video for “The Daisy.” Today he returns with a new lead-up track entitled “Love Divide.”

As we reported back in August, Weatherall’s frustration with his production set-up led to him developing a plug-in called Thresho, which is available through Abelton’s Max For Live platform. Finding that hardware device recording was bogging down his creative flow, the plug-in allowed him to lay down audio once user-defined thresholds had been reached. Then, with this audio seamlessly recorded and archived, the artist was free to experiment, allowing him to build a massive archive of material for the record.

This really shows up on a multifaceted track like “Love Divide.” The cut comes chugging out the gate with thumping four to the floor kicks and ricocheting percussion before arpeggiating melodic elements, and vocal samples lift it in buoyant celebration. But it is the producer’s ability to deftly subvert these hedonistic tendencies, allowing builds to simmer and stew as they gain expressive power, that is increasingly becoming the producer’s stylish signature.
