Listen: Letherette “Rayon”

Letherette released their Refresh EP via Ninja Tune on February 5th. The UK-based duo is composed of childhood friends Richard Roberts and Andy Harber. Growing up in Wolverhampton was perfect for the pair because, as Roberts explains, “…there is nothing to do. It was recently voted the 3rd or 4th worst city in the world…”. With little to distract them from their interest in music, the two would go on to attend classes at Sonic Arts college, befriending folks like Alex Nut and Bibio along the way. Hanging out at local clubs like The Canal and Light Bar, Roberts and Harber would also develop a strong love for house music, and that still animates the heart of their creative output as Letherette. “Rayon” opens the new EP, and is a great example of how the pair refashions this love of the genre into stylish and infectious dance grooves. A sweaty house beat accompanies a micro-planed vocal sample, before warm glowing synth tones add a soulful swing; but what impresses the most is the pair’s deft touch with the ingredients–seeming to place each element perfectly into the mix. While you might have eaten this classic dish many times, Letherette’s seasoned chops makes for flawless fare.
