Baltimore’s William Cashion (Future Islands) and Bruce Willen (Double Dagger) started their minimal, ambient project Peals back in early 2012, recording in Willen’s living room, and this week they released their debut LP Walking Field on Thrill Jockey. Eschewing bass and drums, but utilizing a sonic palette that included acoustic and electric guitar, keyboard and toy piano, as well as field recordings and feedback, the duo choose a home recorded and all-analogue strategy for Walking Field, capturing an organic, meditative sound that leads the listener, track by track, on a headphone-friendly journey inward! “Belle Air” is a fine example, instantly calming, at first, with it’s chimes and bells drifting in sea air and slow rolling waves of static, but before long the track’s manual use of panning pulls one from a desire to space out into a more rapt state of attention! The video, directed by Zoe Friedman, enacts a simple, surreal ritual utilizing an orange, bowl of milk, oyster shells, and feathers, in a simple and homey visual style that echoes the track. Originally part of an art installation at the Clock Room of Bromo Seltzer Tower in Cleveland, the video was projected on four walls while the band performed.
