For OOIOO‘s new album Gamel, due out July 1st via Thrill Jockey, legendary Japanese musician Yoshimi P-We has expanded her musical outfit into a six-piece, so that it might include the addition of two gamelan players. OOIOO’s exuberantly rhythmic music, with it’s ability to incorporate complex and chaotic sonics into amazingly organic, if not brimmingly ordered structures, seems perfectly suited for a cross-cultural meeting with this indigenous Javanese style! “Atatawa” finds the band fusing child-like, playful melodies to chiming and euphoric beat patterns, before dropping heavy progged-out bass, post-punk guitar stabs, and deliriously delivered vocals, all mixed into a psychedelic, channel crossing freakout of pure auditory joy! Look for the deluxe 2xLP version of Gamel to be pressed on virgin vinyl, and packaged in a gorgeous, tropically themed gatefold jacket, as pictured above.
