Listen: C Powers “Phoenix Down”

2069

Chris Powers‘ interest in electronic music started early, scouring the jungle and trance bins at now-defunct Atlanta record stores like Satellite and Rewind with his buddy. Powers would eventually go on to art school in Chicago, continuing to hone his DJ and production skills at parties and shows around the city. After college, Powers moved off to London, falling in with the cities rich tradition of dance music by DJing at club nights for No Pain In Pop and Streets of Beige, as well as in other cities around Europe. More recently, he has arrived back stateside, living in Savannah, GA, where he has teamed up with local promoters Safe//Sound to launch the club night “Cape Fear“. In addition, he co-hosts Atlanta’s “Hunger” night with CGI Records’ Matt Weiner (Twins/Featureless Ghost).
CGI has just released C Powers UP Neck EP on limited edition 12″ vinyl, and you can find it in select stores on October 30th. Effectively the artist’s debut for the label, though he does have a split 12″ with Golden Donna out on CGI, as well as having a couple collaborative tracks with CH Rom on the label’s newest mix tape “The Other Side Of“, this EP finds Powers delivering a rhythmic tour de force, with distinct nods to house, as well as London’s deep bass frequencies. “Phoenix Down” jets out of a sparse, gritty opening of basement bass and rusty, razor sharp slashes of handclap by launching into an auto-erotic disco groove full of clipped, filtering male vocals and deep throbs of bass sub-tone. The cut follows this thru a woozy, but understated break, before locking things back down for a serious helping of robot funk!
