Listen: Palaces “Axiomatic”

Today, let’s meet the Michigan duo Palaces, and check out their new single, “Axiomatic/Let Me Get Higher“. Comprised of two fellas who go by the names S.S. and Cat Cobra, the pair began working on the project in 2012, and have two releases under their belt already–2013’s Side Effects of Dreaming and 2014’s In Transient Light. While the band says the single is the “first of many new pieces”, it’s also a promising first salvo from the duo’s next chapter of work. “Axiomatic” shines in particular, but it’s with an eery kind of black light. Like a midnight ride down Highway 666, with the top down and stars falling from the sky all around, this track balances refracting shards of guitar with warm, crepuscular ambiance. Seeming to spiral towards nefarious conclusions, the lyrics, here, tell of an “axiomatic” love, and if that’s not problematic enough, Palaces weave a kraut-leaning psychedelia with a thorny post-punk edge.
