The Quiet Temple is a collective helmed by Soulsaver’s Rich Machin and multi-instrumentalist Duke Garwood, and it features an amorphous cast of musicians from projects like Stereolab, Spiritualized, and Julian Cope. The group is currently readying their self-titled LP for release on July 19th via Wichita Recordings. This past April we previewed the track “The Last Opium Den (On Earth).”

Machin and Garwood went into the project with fellow musicians Ray Dickaty, Tim Lewis [aka Thighpaulsandra], Pete Marsh, Paul May, and Doggen with three particular jazz records in mind: Larry Young’s Lawrence of Newark, Marcus Belgrave’s Gemini and Noah Howard’s The Black Ark. However, Machin explains the collective sought to “de-jazz some of that stuff and almost approach it from more of a Velvet Underground angle,” before stating, “We wanted to make a record where you could get lost in the groove in more of a Velvets way.”

Recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World studio, The Quiet Temple seems to have found the perfect home for their adventurous approach. Choosing to go into the studio without a set plan was “incredibly stressful at first,” Machin says, but this looser approach ended up being “a really nice way to work.” “Noah’s Theme” is our newest listen in on the upcoming LP, and as the name might suggest, its’ cinematic scope would make it the perfect soundtrack for some noir thriller.
