Watch: Public Speaking “Shifting Weight”

Public Speaking has a brilliant new video for the track “Shifting Weight,” off the composer/multi-instrumentalist’s 2016 LP Caress, Redact (Floordoor Records). Directed by Jake Remington, the visuals star Public Speaking’s Jason Anthony Harris in an intimate and riveting performance that only adds emotional weight to this already harrowing track.

“Shifting Weight” combines the artist’s extraordinary vocal ability with an experimental production style. As a performer, Harris uses found objects, radio, synth, and tape recorder to create noise-driven tapestries of sound that provide cinematic backdrops for his rich and soulful voice. But, as a composer, he also has a real knack for deconstructing sonic narrative in the search for emotionally valid new creations.

With a heart-pounding kick drum and stuttering samples to begin, “Shifting Weight” opens with an immediately ominous atmosphere. Remington and Harris follow suit with stark black and white visuals. Intimately focused on Harris using close-ups and medium shots against a white wall, the musician enacts a serious of performative gestures that lay bear a deep struggle to define one’s own sexual identity. Harris uses a variety of ritualized movements to dramatize this battle and his searing performance is one not easily forgotten.

Look for Public Speaking to release his Six Golden Tumors LP on August 20th. That night the musician will play a record release show at the Union Pool in Brooklyn before heading out on a short tour of the Midwest. Don’t miss the upcoming dates after the YouTube embed below…
