Watch: Samia “Never Said”

Samia returned this week with a cover of the Liz Phair track “Never Said.” The musician explains that she had the “distinct privilege” of playing her songs for John Mellencamp when she was just 14 years old and that he said: “Liz Phair. You’re gonna be like Liz Phair.” Samia goes on to explain:

“Listened to her music pretty exclusively for a few years after that. Haven’t had such a visceral and lasting reaction to anyone’s music since.”

The young artist concedes that the original version of “Never Said” is “obviously untouchable.” The goal, then, was to do something “completely different,” but tempered by an understanding that it would be “impossible to record an entirely new version of it.” With that in mind, and with the artist Raffaella on vocals and Quinn McGovern handling production on the song, Samia says she and the crew “slowed that fucker down.”

Samia’s DIY video for the song finds her joined by the actor’s Lucas Hedges and Fred Hechinger. According to the musician:

“I was hanging out with my friends Fred and Lucas last month and we were filming ourselves doing ridiculous characters…I played them the ‘Never Said’ cover and this sort of just happened. We sent it over to Nick (D’Agostino) who sprinkled magic on it and voila!”

This coming Saturday in Brooklyn look for Samia to headline her Samia + Friends mini-festival at Our Wicked Lady.
