King Buzzo (Melvins) has previewed a third single entitled “Delayed Clarity” from his upcoming solo LP with guest Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas), Gift of Sacrifice (Aug. 14, Ipecac Recordings). Showing off his acoustic side has in no way softened the sting of Buzz Osborne’s art. In fact, “Delayed Clarity” further reveals this approach has only intensified things.
Slow burning focus underlies the rusted jangle of guitar on the cut, before Dunn’s bass enters in support with a whiskey-warmed glow. The track seems content to nod off into the night as an uplifting melodic line separates from the shadows, but this soft spot between waking and dream grows nightmarish when Buzzo rouses chimeras with his voice. Channeling with chthonic authority, he sounds like a man who’s been to hell and back–a few times.
