Out Now: Arrington de Dionyso’s Malaikat dan Singa ‘Open the Crown’

751

Arrington de Dionyso’s Malaikat dan Singa unleashed the primal energies of Open the Crown last month via K Records, and it’s deep chthonic funk can still be felt animating the realms of the lower triangle! The title of Arrington’s project translates from Indonesian as “angels and lions”, and for the past four years the Pacific Northwest artist has written and performed exclusively in that language. While Open the Crown marks a return for Dionyso to his native language, tracks like “Tak Terbatas“, “Jiwa dari Jiwaku“, and “Halilinta” are still performed in Indonesian. Those familiar with Arrington’s previous band, the always amazing Old Time Relijun, will recognize Malaikat dan Singa’s haunted post-punk sonics, as well as his unique, unhinged vocal delivery on the tracks like “I Feel the Quickening“, “Open the Crown“, and the electro-punk, boogie-breakdown that is “I Create in the Broken System“. Recorded in Olympia at Dub Narcotics Studio with Ben Hargett handling the mix and Ephriam Nagler taking care of the mastering, Open the Crown features Dionyso’s cohorts Ben Kapp on drums, Angelo Spencer on guitar, Mark Morrison on keyboards, and Nehemiah St. Danger on bass. It should also be noted that the cover art for Open the Crown was done by Dionyso, and looks to have come out of one of his 24-hour drawing performances. Following the tracks we have the video for “I Create In the Broken System“, as well as some upcoming Malaikat dan Singa live dates-starting tonight in Omaha!
