Atlanta-based producer/DJ/label boss Matt Weiner returns with his TWINS project, releasing the Solid State Skin EP this week on the London micro-label Bravura. Across 4-tracks, Weiner continues to hone what is becoming his signature take on minimalist techno, with nods to Chicago Acid House and his Industrial roots showing thru the cracks and crevices. But what really impresses is the producer’s growing ability to make these elements his own–even while paying homage to Detroit’s glory days!
Heartbleed“, the EP’s closer, is a great example of this, with it’s head-down/hoody-up kind of vibe perfect for finding your own dark corner of the dance floor. A subliminal kick drum and ping-ponging toms drive this track’s solipsistic vibe, while icy synths occupy the expanded space between your head and the ceiling–as they stumble onto a borrowed phrase reminiscent of “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. It’s then that the Acid really kicks in, with the 303 unwinding it’s sick, strychnine bass groove, and hi-hats gassing the joint in a giddy, nitrous mist. Always a potent combo!
