Listen: Jon Spencer “I Got the Hits”

The hit man’s back! That’s right, Jon Spencer will return on November 9th with his debut solo LP Spencer Sings The Hits! due out via In The Red Records. Hard to believe after all his time with bands like The Honeymoon Killers, Pussy Galore, Blues Explosion, and Boss Hog, as well as various side projects like Heavy Trash, that this is the first solo effort from the garage rock legend–but it is.

Spencer Sings The Hits! was recorded in Benton Harbor, MI at Key Club Recording Company with Bill Skibbe, and it finds the vocalist/guitarist teaming up with keyboardist Sam Coomes (Quasi, Heatmeiser) and drummer M. Sord (No Monster Club, M. Sord). Discussing the collaboration, Spencer explains: “Sam is someone with whom I have crossed paths many times over the years. I have always been a fan of his wild keyboard style and twisted tunesmith-ery. (In fact, we kicked around the idea of a collaboration way back in the early aughts.) I got to know Sord from previous visits to and projects done at the Key Club (Andre Williams, JSBX, & Boss Hog). He was the handyman and assistant engineer that turned out to be a great drummer.”

I Got the “Hits” is our newest listen in on the upcoming LP, and it follows up on the album’s first single, “Do The Trash Can”–which we caught up with this past June. Powered by razor-sharp licks and hard-hitting, stripped down percussion, the new cut finds Spencer strutting his trademark cool. If it’s the hits you want, this guys got ’em, but it’s his corruption, malice, and lies that will keep you coming back for more!
