Listen: Derivatives “Expires Worthless”

Derivatives is the Vancouver, BC-based producer Josh Rose, and today we listen to his track “Expires Worthless” off the artist’s upcoming “Unlimited Risk” EP due out via Medical/Transfusions on May 17th. The 12″ follows up on Rose’s Derivatives’ debut for the label, the 2016 EP “Forwards, Futures, And Options.” Known for his blistering, live hardware sets, Derivatives’ newest effort finds those skills on full display.

While “Expires Worthless” employs a minimalist, monochromatic palette, the producer combines rhythmic patterns and industrial tones into a complex amalgam that seems to mutate right before your ears. Bass and percussion make for a galloping groove here, and there’s something expressive and slightly exaggerated about it. With a humid kick drum and lightening snare driving things, Rose tricks out the rhythm with all kinds of stuttering and clanging percussive elements. At times head down and forward moving, the producer can also unleash storms of frenetic activity while piloting the track thru a spine-tingling series of builds and breaks.
